We know that planning an intimate wedding or elopement in Big Sur can feel overwhelming– but that's why we are here! Maddie and I are passionate about helping couples experience the magic of this amazing coastline. Growing up just an hour away, we both have been exploring and camping in Big Sur throughout most of our lives. From the redwoods to the windswept rugged bluffs, this stretch of California coast truly has it all!

We want to make your elopement seamless by providing you with a personalized guide—including permit information, venues, food, and best places to elope in Big Sur.

How to get legally married in California

If you're planning to elope in California, it’s important to make sure everything is legal—so when the day is over, you’re officially married. To do that, you’ll need a California marriage license, which can be picked up at any county clerk’s office in the state. You don’t have to be a California resident, and your license doesn’t need to come from the county where you’re getting married.

There are multiple options when it comes to obtaining your marriage license. Here are a couple options near the Big Sur area to get a marriage license:

• Monterey County Clerk Office - Closest to Big Sur - Easy access from the Monterey Airport
• Santa Clara County Clerk Office - Closest option if you are flying into the San Jose Airport
• San Francisco City Hall - Closest option if flying into SFO



One thing to keep in mind is that county clerk offices are open Monday–Friday, 9–5. Be sure to plan your travel accordingly to avoid any last-minute stress when picking up your license. Also, contact your chosen office ahead of time to confirm whether they accept walk-ins or require an appointment.

When to Elope in Big Sur: A Seasonal Guide

Choosing the right time to elope in Big Sur can make all the difference in your experience. Each season offers something unique, from dramatic coastal views to quieter, more intimate moments. Here’s what to expect throughout the year:

Here's a quick rundown of Big Sur through out the year:

• It can be hot in the summer, but always be prepared to be cold!
• Looking to save a bit of money and avoid peak tourism? Elope here in the offseason! (November through early March)
• Wildflowers bloom from March to June and start to fade in July.
• Calla Lillies start to bloom in late January and fade in April.
• In mid December, vast stretches of ice plant transform into a vibrant red, creating a stunning contrast against the deep blue ocean and rolling green hills (see photo below)

Spring (March – May)

Spring is one of the best times to elope in Big Sur. The hills are lush and green from winter rains, some wildflowers are in bloom, and the weather is mild. Crowds are smaller than in the summer, making it easier to find a peaceful spot for your ceremony. However, occasional rain showers are still possible, so having a backup plan is a good idea. That being said, photos in inclement weather are epic and crowds will be slim to none!

Summer (June – August)

While summer brings long days and warmer temperatures, it’s also peak tourist season. Weekend traffic along Highway 1 will be heavy, and popular locations may be crowded. If summer is your preferred time, consider a sunrise or weekday elopement to avoid the busiest hours. Coastal fog is common in the mornings but often burns off by midday, revealing stunning ocean views. It's worth noting that summer temperatures can be warm but definitely make sure to pack something warm too as it can get cold quickly! If you are looking to avoid the rain these are the best months.

Fall (September – November)

Fall is another fantastic season for elopements. The summer crowds begin to fade, and the weather remains warm and stable. September and October often offer the clearest skies of the year, with less fog and breathtaking sunsets. This is a great time to take advantage of Big Sur’s golden light and quieter atmosphere.

Winter (December – February)

Winter elopements in Big Sur can be incredibly intimate, with fewer visitors and moody coastal scenery. The cooler temperatures and occasional rain create dramatic backdrops, perfect for couples who love a cozy, adventurous feel. Winter can also bring big swells to the coastline, which can be fun to watch in places like Garrapatta State Park! Winter does bring rain storms that can lead to road closures along Highway 1, so keeping an eye on conditions and having flexibility in your plans is essential. Again, photos in inclement weather are epic and crowds will be slim to none!

On the flip side, winter can also be extremely nice and sunny. I have spent many winter days in Big Sur with great weather.

All this being said, there is no best time to elope in Big Sur. It all depends on what you want out of your day. Some couples crave fog while others want wildflowers... To each their own!

Permits for your Big Sur Elopement:

Most of Big Sur, including the coastline along Highway 1, is state-owned land, which means a permit is typically required for elopements. Since a significant portion of the public land along the coast falls within state park boundaries, keep this in mind when selecting your location.

Throughout Big Sur permitting for elopements varies. I'll go ahead and break down how they differ.

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Andrew Molera State Park and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

• The parks listed above have very specific regulations for what qualifies as an elopement. Click here to see what you need to qualify for an elopement permit.
• $300 permit fee
• You can apply for a permit up to six months in advance
• $75 Rush fee applies if you are trying to get a permit within 30 days of the elopement. This must be paid with a cashiers check or a money order.

LimeKiln State Park

• No permit required.
• Park is limited to day use only and the redwood trails are closed at this time.
• Only accessible from the from the South due to Reagents slide.
• I'll update this when the trails open as this park is one of my favorites.

Garrapatta State Park

• Hands down one of the best parks to elope in the Big Sur area!
• Permits start at $400 for up to 25 people. The cost goes up if the more people you have in your party.
• Call (831) 624-3407 or email fwilson@parks.ca.gov to obtain a permit.

Pfieffer Beach

• No permit required
• Parking ($10) can be full, the road can flood, and can be very windy.
• Great for last minute elopements.

May - September (High Season)

Elopement and special event permits for the Big Sur Sector State Parks are issued only on Monday - Thursday from May through September.

November - April (Off-Season)

Weekend elopements are permitted. Even though it's the "off season" keep in mind that Big Sur is an extremely popular tourist destination so parking will be a lot harder and hiking/ beaches will be more crowded on the weekend.

Other permit information:

• You can apply for a permit up to six months in advance
• Applications received 21 days or less before the event will not be considered
• Applications received 45 days or less in advance may have additional fees and restrictions
• The permit process usually takes one to two weeks after all requirements are met
• Permits are not given out on holidays/holiday weekends
• Most parks have a limit of 10 people for a permit. This includes your photographer, officiant, and other vendors.
• It's a good idea to call the permit office as soon as you pick your date to see if you can secure it!

The easiest way to navigate permits is by talking with your photographer/planner. Generally, if your group includes more than 10 people, securing a private venue is usually the best option to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience. Private venues do not require permits!

What day should I elope in Big Sur?

Regardless of the season, Eloping on Monday-Thursday is highly recommended.

There are a few factors that go into this recommendation: permits, crowds, and vendor choices.

Only one permit is granted to one couple per day for all Big Sur state parks (with the exception of Garrapata State Park). So, say a couple has already locked in a permit for a Andrew Molera State Park Elopement and you are trying to get an elopement permit for Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park on the same day, your permit will be denied. When weekend elopements are allowed, you will have a lot more competition securing a permit for those weekend dates. There is simply less demand on the weekdays making permits a bit easier to obtain.

When thinking of having a summer elopement in Big Sur, just keep in mind that it’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in California… combine that with weekend crowds from the bay area, you get chaotic parking situations, traffic, and crowded beaches and trails!

Another benefit of having a weekday elopement in Big Sur is that you will have better luck booking your top vendors, lodging, and location picks on a weekday. Vendors and accommodation in the area will likely be booked up on the weekends far in advance especially in high season.

If you can swing a weekday elopement in Big Sur, do it!

Best ceremony locations in Big Sur (Public land)

There are so many beautiful spots to choose from here and all of them are beautiful in their own ways. Here are some of my favorite locations to get married in Big Sur:

Garrapatta State Park

In my opinion, Garrapatta State Park is the best coastal location in Big Sur. It’s got sweeping ocean views, beach access, redwoods, and many small hikes on coastal bluffs straight off Highway 1. Some might say it's got it all! 

• Permit required ($400 or more)
• You can have 25 guests on the bluffs or more if you have the ceremony on the beach
• Easily accessible
• Wildflower blooms in Spring and Summer bring pops of color
• Closest park to the amenities of Carmel and Monterey
• Great for sunset portraits
• No official parking lot, Parking is off highway 1.

Andrew Molera State Park

 With its rugged coastline, scenic hiking trails, and secluded beaches, it offers a perfect mix of dramatic ocean views and natural beauty. The park is less crowded than other popular Big Sur locations, providing a more intimate and peaceful setting for your special day. Whether you're exchanging vows on a windswept bluff or taking romantic portraits along the river and wildflower-filled meadows, Andrew Molera offers an unforgettable backdrop for your elopement.

• Typically less crowded than some other Big Sur locations
• Parking is easy ($10)
• Permit required - $300 - up to 10 people
• About 40 minutes away from Monterey
• Great hiking!
• Redwoods if you hike to them.
• About 15 minute drive to some of the best options for Dinning and lodging. (Post Ranch inn, Ventana, Glen Oaks)

Pfieffer Beach

Pfeiffer Beach is a breathtaking elopement spot in Big Sur, known for its unique purple sand and rugged coastline. With dramatic rock formations, crashing waves, and golden sunsets, it’s the perfect mix of adventure and romance for an unforgettable ceremony.

• Can be very windy
• Parking lot can be full
• Gorgeous sunsets
• Famous for its key hole arch
• No Permit required
• 10-15 minutes from upscale dining and lodging

Prewitt Ridge

Perched high above the clouds, Prewitt Ridge offers one of the most breathtaking and secluded elopement spots in Big Sur. With panoramic views of the rugged coastline, rolling mountains, and endless ocean, it’s the perfect setting for couples who want an adventurous, off-the-grid experience. Whether you hike in at sunrise or camp under the stars, saying your vows here feels like standing on top of the world. If you’re dreaming of an elopement that’s wild, intimate, and truly unforgettable, Prewitt Ridge is waiting for you.

• Need a off road capable vehicle
• No amenities as this is US Forest land
• One of the most secluded areas
• Would only recommend for couples who want to keep things very simple and have kick ass photos
• Camping recommended (fist come first served dispersed camping)

Best Venues for an intimate wedding in Big Sur (Private Land)

If you’re dreaming of a Big Sur elopement but also want the convenience and amenities of a venue, there are plenty of options to combine both. Several stunning locations in Big Sur offer private event spaces with breathtaking views, allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds—an intimate, scenic ceremony with the comforts of a well-equipped venue.

Loma Vista Gardens

Loma Vista Gardens is a gorgeous venue situated 30 miles south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, offering a lush, intimate setting for couples looking to elope in Big Sur. Surrounded by towering redwoods and beautifully landscaped gardens, this venue provides a serene and private atmosphere while still being easily accessible. While it doesn’t have direct ocean views, the charming garden setting and rustic-meets-elegant vibe make it a standout choice for couples who want to celebrate with a small group of loved ones. Plus, its central location means you’re just a short drive from some of Big Sur’s best restaurants and accommodations, making it easy to continue the celebration after your vows. Loma Vista Gardens in Big Sur can accommodate up to 210 guests for weddings and events. Their Full Day Package offers tiered pricing based on guest count:

• 1-75 guests: $14,800
• 76-125 guests: $17,200
• 126-175 guests: $21,300
• 176-210 guests: $26,400

For more intimate gatherings, they offer a Micro-Wedding Package:

• 1-25 guests: $10,400 (available Monday to Thursday)
• 26-50 guests: $12,600 (available Monday to Friday)

If your looking to keep it simple you can rent the space for 2 hours with up to 16 people total for $3,200.

This venue combines rustic charm with modern comfort, offering a secluded, peaceful setting right along the Big Sur River. Tucked away off Highway 1, it’s about 45 minutes south of Carmel and 15 minutes north of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park—making it easily accessible while still feeling like a hidden escape.

Ceremony & Reception Spaces

Glen Oaks offers a few options for saying your vows, but the Redwood Grove is the real showstopper. If you’re planning a small reception, the on-site Big Sur Roadhouse provides cozy indoor and outdoor spaces. The back patio, strung with twinkle lights, is perfect for an intimate dinner, while the indoor space features warm fireplaces, wood-beamed ceilings, and a laid-back yet stylish vibe.

With Pfieffer Big Sur State park trails just a short walk away, it’s perfect for couples who love the outdoors. Just keep in mind that since it’s in the park, you might see a few hikers nearby, and a photography permit is required for any park photos (Monday–Thursday only).

Ventana Big Sur

Ventana Big Sur is one of the most romantic and luxurious resorts in the U.S., making it a perfect choice for an intimate wedding or elopement. Their all-inclusive packages take care of every detail, so you can truly relax and soak in the experience. While it’s on the higher end price-wise, the resort offers so much in return—private redwood trails, incredible dining with stunning sunset views, and two breathtaking ceremony locations: one overlooking the ocean and the other a under a redwood grove.

For couples who love the idea of being surrounded by nature but still want a touch of luxury, Ventana also offers a glamping experience. Now for the question that everyone wants to know... How much does it cost to elope in Big Sur? Obviously this can vary a lot depending on what you want, who you hire, where you stay, guest count, and what you choose to do. As you're thinking about your wedding, ask yourself what's most important to you and if certain things like a $5000 dollar dress or a luxurious stay in a hotel is worth the splurge. If you want to keep things simple, you can spend the day exploring the coast, hiking through the redwoods, and exchanging vows in a secluded spot with just the two of you. A small bouquet, a heartfelt ceremony, and a cozy Airbnb can make for a magical and budget-friendly experience. On the other hand, if you’re dreaming of a more extravagant day, you can book a stunning venue, indulge in a private chef’s dinner, and stay at one of Big Sur’s luxury resorts for the ultimate wedding getaway. No matter what you choose, Big Sur is an unforgettable place to start your marriage in a way that feels true to you.

Big Sur Elopement Tips

• Download an offline map of the Big Sur area on google maps. I always recommend this to my couples. Something to note about Big Sur is that there is hardly any cell service. If I am not meeting my couples at their accommodation and we are meeting at a location on the coast, I ask them to save a pin on their offline map of our meeting spot. This way there is no confusion and we don't waste anytime trying to find each other!

• Know what poison oak looks like. Whether you plan to have your Big Sur elopement on the bluffs overlooking the ocean or in the forest, poison oak is everywhere. It's important to familiarize yourself with what it looks like so you can avoid being itchy the following days after your wedding day! To be cautious I'll leave you with a saying to help you avoid it "Leaves of three, leave them be." Poison oak always grow in clusters of three leaves and can change color with the seasons—bright green in spring, reddish in summer, and deep red or brown in the fall. It can grow as a bush, a ground cover, or even climb trees like a vine, making it easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Stick to established trails, avoid brushing against vegetation. I always supply my couples with poison oak wipes just to be sure nobody gets itchy!
• Be prepared for wind and weather. Big Sur’s beauty comes with unpredictable weather, so it’s important to be ready for whatever nature throws your way. Coastal fog can roll in quickly, temperatures can drop unexpectedly, and strong ocean winds are common. Layers are your best friend, and opting for secure hairstyles and attire that moves well in the wind can make all the difference. If rain is in the forecast, having a backup plan or embracing the elements can turn unexpected weather into part of your adventure. A little preparation ensures you stay comfortable and focused on your day!
• Respect the environment and leave no trace. Big Sur is a protected and fragile landscape. Stick to designated trails, follow Leave No Trace principles, and avoid stepping on vegetation. Preserving the beauty of the area ensures that future couples can enjoy it too!
• Hire Local vendors. Having vendors who know the area can make a huge difference. Local florists, officiants, and photographers (like us!) can provide valuable insight into the best locations, hidden gems, and logistical considerations.
• Embrace the day. The best part about eloping in Big Sur is the sense of adventure. Whether it’s hiking to a cliffside ceremony spot, saying your vows with the waves crashing below, or embracing whatever weather comes your way—lean into the experience, and you’ll have a wedding day that’s as wild and beautiful as your love story.
