As a California adventure elopement photographer, I’ve explored some of the most breathtaking locations and helped couples craft unforgettable elopement experiences. In this guide, I’ll share the best locations to elope in California to help you find the perfect spot for your once-in-a-lifetime day.

Yosemite National Park

It’s no secret that Yosemite National Park is one of the most breathtaking places to elope in California, offering towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and serene alpine meadows. Whether you dream of saying your vows beneath the towering presence of El Capitan, standing hand in hand at Glacier Point with sweeping valley views, or finding a secluded spot near the Merced river, Yosemite provides a truly awe-inspiring backdrop. The park’s ever-changing beauty creates a magical atmosphere that makes every elopement feel like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For adventurous couples, hiking to Taft Point or Sentinel Dome offers an intimate and jaw-dropping setting, while iconic locations like Yosemite Falls and Cathedral Beach provide easily accessible yet equally stunning options. No matter where you choose, eloping in Yosemite guarantees an unforgettable experience surrounded by some of the most iconic landscapes in the world. If you are planning on eloping here I'd highly recommend booking a room at The Awanhee hotel or if you want to keep it a bit more rustic, you can try to snag a campground. If it's your first time in Yosemite, be prepared to have your jaw dropped!


Maddie and I both grew up exploring this park and it continues to be one of our favorite spots on the planet. We've seen Yosemite in all the seasons and each time of year offers a different kind of beauty. It's our passion to show couples around our favorite spots and watch their jaws drop in awe. Some of our favorite spots for a Yosemite elopement include Taft Point for sunset, Glacier Point for both sunrise and sunset, Sentinel Dome for sweeping 360º views of the park and the valley below, and last but definitely not least, Yosemite valley. There are so many beautiful meadows and epic waterfall views down in the valley it is hard to pick a bad spot.


To elope in Yosemite you do need a permit, which cost $150.  Applications should be submitted at least 21 days in advance, but applying up to a year ahead is recommended!

If you are looking to do a camping elopement in Yosemite be aware that camp sites are reservable 5 months in advance and they sell out almost instantly! Reservations open in one-month blocks on the 15th of the month at 7 a.m. Pacific Time. Permits are also required for eloping here!

Redwoods National & State Parks

There’s something truly magical about Redwood National and State Parks. It’s an incredible spot for couples who want a quiet, intimate elopement surrounded by nature’s beauty. Whether you exchange vows in a secluded grove in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, walk hand in hand through the dreamy trails of Prairie Creek, or say “I do” with ocean views at Gold Bluffs Beach, every location feels straight out of a fairytale. If you’re looking for a place that blends epic scenery with peaceful seclusion, Redwood National and State Parks is the perfect spot to start your next chapter.


Eloping in Redwood National and State Parks does require some extra planning, as the area is pretty remote. The nearest major airports are in Medford, Oregon, and San Francisco, both of which require a few hours of driving to reach the heart of the redwoods. Towns like Crescent City and Eureka offer some lodging and amenities, but services can be limited, so it’s important to come prepared with everything you’ll need for your day. If you're looking for a fine dining experience on your wedding day, this probably is not the place for you. Many locations within the park have little to no cell service, which adds to the sense of seclusion but also means you’ll want to plan logistics ahead of time. No problem here, we will help you with all of that!


If you’re looking for a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path elopement where you can truly disconnect and be surrounded by nature, Redwood National and State Parks is a perfect choice.


Also, keep in mind that a Special Use Permit is required for ceremonies within the park. Permits can be obtained through the National Park Service, and it’s best to apply at least a few weeks in advance to ensure availability. Some locations may have restrictions on group size or decor to protect the delicate ecosystem, so be sure to check the park’s guidelines when choosing your spot. With a little planning, Redwood National and State Parks offers one of the most breathtaking and peaceful places to start your forever.

Mendocino

There’s a quiet charm to Mendocino that’s hard to put into words — windswept bluffs, dramatic cliffs, and coastal forests that feel both wild and intimate. Compared to more remote locations like Redwood National and State Parks, Mendocino is a bit easier to access — about a 3-hour drive from the Bay Area, making it a great option for couples looking for a scenic escape without going completely off-grid. The town of Mendocino itself is small but charming, with cozy inns, art galleries, and some surprisingly great food (hello, local wine, fresh seafood, cute coffee shops, and great pizza). It’s the kind of place where you can get married, grab a celebratory dinner, and then head back to a romantic Airbnb tucked in the woods.


That said, coastal weather can be unpredictable, especially in the winter and spring months, so it’s a good idea to pack layers and plan with flexibility in mind. Cell service is spotty along the coast and in the parks, but that’s part of what makes it feel so special — you can unplug, tune in, and be fully present with each other.


Depending on the exact ceremony spot, you may need a Special Use Permit, especially if you’re planning to elope in one of the nearby state parks like Mendocino Headlands, Russian Gulch, or Van Damme. With its windswept beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and easy blend of forest and sea, Mendocino is a perfect place for couples looking for a relaxed, romantic wedding day that feels like it’s just yours.

Point Reyes National Seashore | Marin County, Ca
